Week 5 Review

Another week of U18 football saw another goalful weekend with 38 goals across the 12 games with 5 goals taking place with Stoke v Wolves, Chelsea v West Brom and West Ham v Southampton and there being no goalless games, the first time this has happened over a weekend this season.

North Division
Manchester City continued their 100% record for the season with a 1-0 win at home in the derby against Manchester United. (highlights) The only goal of the game coming from Manu Garcia with a brilliant curling effort into the top corner following a free kick not being properly cleared.

Newcastle and Blackburn meanwhile remained on 1 point, Newcastle falling 1-0 away at Middlesbrough whilst Blackburn’s defence continued to be carved apart this season with a 4-0 loss at home to Everton.

I managed to get down and watch Blackburn v Everton. As I say the defence was pulled apart despite changes from previous games and Blackburn had very little going forward. I personally think it is very telling that Rovers two goals this season have come from one piece of solo running and a punt forward from the half way line and questions must be asked what is done in training. Also I felt first half especially they dropped back so far that they only applied pressure on the ball when Everton were around 35-40 yards out, far too late and it just meant when Blackburn did get the ball they had to travel a long way to make any decent headway.

Stoke meanwhile fell down 4-1 at home to Wolves whilst Bolton continued their up and down form with a 3-0 loss away at Liverpool.

South Division
Chelsea joined Arsenal at the top of the league with a thumping 5-0 win at home to West Brom. Tammy Abraham scored a brace and the big man up front took his tally for the season to 5. He took both goals very well and I’m sure his height and touch will see him picked up should he fail to make the grade at Chelsea, that’s not to say I don’t think he will however. Tammy is still 16, turning 17 at start of next month, but he could be one to watch. He made his debut for Chelsea U18s whilst still 15 last season. He has already matched last year’s total of 5 goals also from 17 games. He has been with Chelsea since Under 8 level.

Highlights of the Chelsea v West Brom game are available here (Highlights)

Arsenal meanwhile drew 2-2 at home to Reading, with Stephy Mavididi scoring his 8th and 9th goals of the season. Mavididi has now scored more goals than 13 of the TEAMS at U18 level.

West Ham meanwhile came from 2 goals down to beat Southampton 3-2 at home. Josh Brown for West Ham grabbing his 4th goal of the season before a late goal from Kieran Bradley grabbed West Ham’s the 3 points.

Brighton meanwhile won 3-0 at home against Aston Villa with Jordan Maguire-Drew scoring all 3 goals.

Highlight games – Bolton v Stoke could be an interesting affair whilst Tottenham will be aiming to halt Chelsea’s 3 game unbeaten run by maintaining their own unbeaten run with Tottenham failing to lose so far (Pl 5, W1, D4)

West Ham are also unbeaten having won 2 and drawn 3 of their 5 games.

Newcastle and Blackburn will look to get their first wins of the season along with Southampton.

Personal Bit
To highjack my own blog I am also looking for sponsorship for a 53 mile bike ride which I am doing Saturday 27th September. The bike ride is from Manchester to Blackpool and starts at 12.00am. I am doing it with my brother in law and raising money for the British Heart Foundation, anything you can sponsor us and the BHF would be much appreciated. Sponsor Us Here

Thanks for reading, have a good weekend and as always feedback much appreciated.
