Hurrah International Break Is Over

Following two weeks without a game the Barclays U18 Premier League gets back under way this weekend.

Before looking ahead to the weekend let’s have a roundup of the international break for England’s youth teams.

England U20s
On Friday 5th September England U20s defeated their Romanian counterparts 6-0 in Telford.
England Starting XI 1 Christian Walton (Brighton & Hove Albion);2 Isaac Hayden (Arsenal), 5 Dominic Ball (Tottenham Hotspur), 6 Shay Facey (Manchester City), 3 Matt Targett (Southampton); 4 Lewis Baker (Chelsea), 8 John Swift (Chelsea); 10 Callum Robinson (Aston Villa), 11 Rolando Aarons (Newcastle United), 7 Jordon Ibe (Derby County, on loan from Liverpool); 9 Chuba Akpom (Arsenal)

The goals came from Robinson (2), Aarons, Murphy (Sub-Norwich), Baker and Thomas (Sub-Derby).

Manager Aidy Boothroyd (Yes that one) was delighted with the England display, all England goals came in the 2nd half.

England U19s
On Monday 8th September England U19s drew 1-1 away in Germany.

England (4-3-3): 1 Angus Gunn (Manchester City); 2 Ashley Smith-Brown (Manchester City), 5 Joseph Gomez (Charlton Athletic), 6 Brendan Galloway (Everton), 3 Ben Chilwell (Leicester City; 4 Bryn Morris (Middlesbrough), 8 Dele Alli MK Dons), 10 Charlie Colkett (Chelsea); 7 Alex  Kiwomya (Chelsea), 11 Patrick Roberts (Fulham), 9 Bradley Fewster (Middlesbrough).

Bradley Fewster scored England’s goal before later having a penalty saved, Germany scored with a great move finished off by Stuttgart’s Timo Werner. Highlights of the game are here:

This was the final game for the U19s before Sean O’Driscoll takes charge of the team, his first games see the U19s start their qualification process for the U19 European Championship next month with 3 games in a week

Friday 10 October 2014 England v Belarus
Sunday 12 October 2014 Luxembourg v England
Wednesday 15 October 2014 England v Belgium

How playing 3 games in 6 days can be of any use and help the players develop is a bit beyond me.

The 2015 competition takes place in Greece. The Qualifying Round consists of 52 teams split into 13 groups of 4.The Top 2 teams qualify for the next qualifying round (The Elite Round) along with the best 3rd place team as well as the country with the best co-efficient which is Spain. They are then split into 7 groups of 4. The seven group winners then join hosts Greece in the Finals.

England U18s
England played 2 games against Holland in Leigh and Bury within the space of 3 days.

England won the 2 games 4-1 and 3-1.

In the first game Adam Armstrong (Newcastle) got 2 with Josh Sims (Southampton) and Demetri Mitchell (Man Utd) were the scorers after Holland had took the lead following poor England defending. Armstrong took his goals very well however Sims and Mitchell’s goals are sensational. Sims ending a mazy run with a great finish across the keeper before Mitchell finished the scoring with a great free kick after another Sims run. Highlights are here:

In the second game, Callum Connolly (Everton) scored two with Dominic Solanke (Chelsea) getting the other. Connolly gave England the lead following the Dutch failing to clear a corner and from 6 yards out he swept the ball home. Solanke then doubled England’s lead after he had initially shrugged off a defender and shot straight at the keeper he kept his composure to poke the ball home. The Dutch then got back in to it with a great strike from the edge of the area before Connolly restored England’s two goal advantage with 15 mins remaining again sweeping the ball home after a good run by Josh Sims down the right hand side.

A great few weeks for England’s youth sides with them not losing a game against some good opposition.
